Free Internet via TATA CDMA Phone - This was a trial done on the basis of an online article and the following procedure should only be used as a Knowledge base material. We are in no way responsible for any legal issues faced by you.
Tata Indicom is a major CDMA operator and offering really cheap handset along with their connection.
Some of the cheapest handsets they provide are by Haier or Huawie which retails at Rs. 700/- - Rs. 1,500/- without any connection charge. Where as one can obtain a year of connection with Rs. 149. Please ensure that your connection is prepaid before you venture for the following
With the above mentioned phones you will find a USB miniport at the base or the back of the phone. This cable is similar to the one used in blackberry's, External Hard Disks or even some of the Digi Cams, Such cables are also available in the market for Rs. 80-150/-
Please ensure that any handset that you choose don't dare to choose with a data plan hence go for a very old handset or some of the basic ones where TATA doesn't support Data in Phone.
Now Connect the USB cable from the phone to your PC/Laptop, Preferable and tested operating system is Win XP, am not aware is Vista supports it and win98 wont work.
The most troublesome phase for the process is finding the driver, simple connect your PC to internet and then connect the phone you will get a window to install the driver for the new phone, click on automatic detect drivers, post that the window will ask if windows can connect to the Net and check for drivers after a through search for 5-15 mins, It will provide a driver, even if its not digitally signed just click OK and you are good to go.
Once the driver is installed and the system restarts (if needed), go to network connections and create a new dial up connection using the new installed driver as modem. Now for the username use Internet and Password as Internet.
Bingo it gets connected and Happy Surfing!!!
The only problem with the connection is the slow speed but then again its free, Please ensure that once you are connected disconnect it and check if any amount has been detected the reason being most of the new handsets even though dont support data in phone the TATA system detects any data usage and deducts from your Phone Pre Paid Connection. Hence the best solution is the use a very old handset. Also you must use a CDMA handset and not a T-SIM enabled handset for the above.
Do give it a try and Post the responses.
