Tata Internet Settings - Windows

To get a Tata Indicom Fixed Wireless Phone to connect to the internet, Do NOT use the installer CD that they provide.

The main idea is that the modem is built into the phone, and you just need a dummy modem connection from the computer to the phone to get it started.

Note: These instructions are for Windows XP.

For a computer with a serial port:

1. Go to -> Control Panel -> Select Phone and Modem options

2. Install a new modem on your computer. Do not allow the computer to detect a Plug and Play modem. Instead, select the Standard 33600 modem that is available as one of the default choices. (I don't know if the other modems work as well. Don't worry - it will connect at 115 kbps, not 33.6 kbps).

3. Install the modem on any COM port that is available.

4. Once the modem is installed, select it and click on Properties. Under Advanced, add the following Extra Initialization command: "AT+CRM=1" (without the quotes).

5. Go to Network Connections (or dial up networking) and create a new connection using the wizard. On the various dialog boxes, select:
a. Connect to the Internet
b. Set up my connection manually
c. Connect using a dial-up modem
d. Choose the modem that you have just installed
e. Choose any ISP name ("Tata" is fine)
f. Phone Number "#777" (without the quotes)
g. Username: internet Password: internet

6. Connect the Tata Indicom Cable to the phone and the computer.

7. Set the phone to the right baud rate:
a. Press Menu
b. Press 2 (Additional)
c. Press 4 (Data Baudrate)
d. Use -/+ to select 115,200 (it doesn't work if you set a higher speed)
e. Press OK

8. Dial the connection you have just created.

Happy Surfing !!!

For a computer with only a USB port (many new laptops do not have a serial port):

1. Buy a Serial 9 pin Male to USB male cable/connector(Cost is around Rs.100-200/-).

2. Connect the Tata Indicom cable to the phone and via the connector to the computer

3. When prompted to install the driver for the new Hardware, insert the driver CD that came with the USB/Serial bridge connector

4. Once the driver is installed, follow steps 1-8 for the serial port
